If you missed it, there was a story about a Minnesota dad who was woken up by his daughter in the middle of the night. She was cold and shivering in the cold mid west night while in her bed. Why? The power had gone off because of downed power lines in the winter storm. The oil burner was off and his pipes were beginning to freeze. It’s really cold in Minnesota. It took four days to get their power restored but before heat would come back, the pipes in the kitchen had burst and he was looking at huge plumber bills. This had happened a few years back and he had had enough. If it happened twice, it will happen again in the future and he did not want his daughter very cold in bed. He began to explore alternative options not as complete substitutes but as complimentary to his power that comes from the grid.
Will Use of Solar Power Save Money?
Solar panels are being used by many people who are concerned about conserving energy and cash. Solar energy will provide affordable energy for many years after installation.
Much improved technology
The technology used to build and install solar panels has improved greatly since they first became available. The thermovoltiac devices currently available are able to produce both electrical and thermal energy, and the electricity can be stored for use at night or on cloudy days. Many utility companies offer to purchase excess solar generated electricity from their customers, which helps to reduce the time it takes to recoup the cost of the solar panel installation.
Reduced living costs
Most homeowners look for ways to reduce their living costs, and decreasing or eliminating energy costs is a great way to save some cash. Solar panels on your roof will help reduce monthly living expenses. A penny saved is a penny earned.
Tax reduction benefits
The two main reasons people are switching to solar power today are the rising cost of electricity and the federal and state tax incentives available to many home owners today. The US federal government has offered significant tax incentive to home owners who install solar power as an alternative energy source with additional tax credits and incentives that vary by state. Solar power continues to grow in popularity across the United States, citizens and lawmakers are pushing to expand alternative energy programs.
