What is legal aid?

Legal aid is the legal assistance offered to mostly poor people when they need legal help. Legal representation is guaranteed in the constitution only when it concerns criminal cases, but not civil matters. Legal aid helps in civil cases where representation is not guaranteed.  


Examples of civil legal cases include: such as unlawful evictions, foreclosure, domestic abuse, divorce or wrongful denial of government assistance, consumer, family, education, and employment


Almost 47 million people, and more than one in five children, live in or near poverty in the United States. Without legal aid, millions of poor people would have no access to a fair trial. This would undermine our nation’s fundamental idea of equal justice for all.

Who receives legal aid?

Some examples include: Women and children are protected from domestic abuse and violence, veteran’s rights and benefits are protected, elderly people are represented from illegal evictions. 


More legal aid services may include:

  • Legal advice over the telephone
  • More detailed information sent to you by mail
  • Limited service (e.g., filing a form)
  • Full representation of your case
  • Referrals to pro bono (volunteer) attorneys for legal representation.
  • Referrals to other services
  • Free legal information and forms on our website


The Legal Services Corporation (LSC) a non-profit corporation funded by the federal government. The LSC has offices countrywide and provides grants nationwide.

Below are examples of people who may qualify:

  • Your household income is less than 125% of the federally recognized poverty level. Check your state poverty requirements.
  • You are a disabled veteran
  • You are an immigrant
  • You are a victim of domestic abuse
  • You are a community organization
  • You receive other federal recognized benefits
  • Your case involves civil rights
